Torre

·

Mainland Portugal's highest peak at 1,993 m, Torre dominates Serra da Estrela: panoramic views, ski resort and mountain products.

Torre rises to 1,993 meters on the Serra da Estrela massif in central Portugal. It is the highest point of mainland Portugal, marked by a stone tower built at the summit of Malhão da Estrela to symbolically reach 2,000 meters. The site combines glacial landscapes, a ski resort, mountain gastronomy and pastoral heritage within a natural park recognized by UNESCO.

Why visit Torre

Torre offers one of the broadest perspectives over central Portugal: from this rounded summit, the view extends across medieval villages of Beira, forests of Covão d'Ametade, the glacial valleys of Loriga and the river beaches of Zêzere. It is also a gateway to Serra da Estrela Natural Park, which spans 2,216 km² and has been designated as "Estrela Geopark Mundial" by UNESCO.

The site brings together several facets of Portugal's mountain landscape: a summit accessible by car, the country's only ski resort, a trade in local products (cheese, wool, bread), and a calendar marked by seasonal livestock transhumance. Visitor numbers remain moderate outside the winter season, making it an ideal stop on a central Portugal itinerary.

History and geography

Before the 15th century, Serra da Estrela held the highest point of Portuguese territory as then known. This changed with the gradual discovery of the Azores archipelago by Portuguese navigators: the earliest islands, traditionally attributed to Diogo de Silves around 1427, shifted the altitude record to Pico, which reaches 2,351 meters on the island of the same name. Since then, Torre has retained the status of mainland Portugal's highest peak.

The summit of Malhão da Estrela reaches 1,993 meters. To symbolically cross the 2,000-meter threshold, a 7-meter high stone tower was erected at the summit: this is what gives the location its name. This two-level structure now marks the arrival point of the road to the highest peak.

What to see on site

The summit and its panorama

The summit is well developed: parking, stone tower, altitude markers. The panoramic view covers much of the park, from agricultural foothills to U-shaped valleys carved by ancient glaciers. On clear days, the hilltop villages of Beira can be identified with the naked eye.

Products and local culture

At the foot of Torre, a shopping center groups together boutiques and dining options. Here you will find the emblematic productions of the region:

  • clothing and decorative items in burel, thick wool traditionally woven in Manteigas;
  • Queijo Serra da Estrela, soft-paste sheep cheese, typically served with Beira bread;
  • items related to the Cão da Serra da Estrela, one of the oldest Iberian dog breeds, traditionally used by herders in the massif.

The ski resort

Adjacent to Torre, the Serra da Estrela ski resort is Portugal's only ski station. It offers alpine skiing, sledding, snowboarding and snowmobiling, with equipment rentals on site. Artificial snow supplements natural snowfall when insufficient. Access is weather-dependent and conditions-dependent, typically between December and March.

When to visit

June through September is the most favorable period for hiking and landscape observation: temperatures around 15°C during the day at the summit, limited precipitation, wildflower meadows in the glacial valleys. This is also when the forests of Covão d'Ametade are most accessible.

In early July, the transhumance festival marks the departure of herds to high-altitude pastures: processions of sheep and goats, bells, music in mountain villages. It is one of the massif's key cultural events.

Winter (December to March) is reserved for snow activities: the resort operates, but the road may be closed or regulated depending on conditions. The altitude requires appropriate equipment year-round, with the summit exposed to wind and sudden weather changes.
