Looking to get away and escape? Follow us to the Iberian Peninsula, for a weekend in Portugal! From the Douro Valley to Algarve, via Porto, Aveiro Costa Nova and Lisbon: guaranteed change of scenery just a few hours from France…
Douro Valley: escape into the heart of nature
Located in northern Portugal, the Douro Valley is renowned for the beauty (and quality) of its vineyard landscapes. The region can be explored through wine-tasting excursions. Beyond tasting its wine, which has a worldwide reputation, you'll discover the famous quintas that dot its lush lands (part of which is UNESCO World Heritage–listed).
The valley is also celebrated for its picturesque charm. The towns of Vila Real, Lamego and Peso da Régua will enchant you with their palaces and cathedrals, built in centuries past! Do you prefer outdoor activities or wildlife watching? Visit the Douro International Nature Park and the Reserva Natural Estuário do Douro.
Porto: enjoy yourself near the Atlantic coast
Porto is an ideal city for culture lovers. Architecture enthusiasts can admire the splendid azulejos decorating the facades of the Igreja do Carmo church, the Capela das Almas, or those of the São Bento train station, while music lovers will be captivated by the beauty of fado or the live music of a classical, jazz or folk concert at the Casa da Música.
One must-see that enchants all visitors? The magnificent neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa, a UNESCO World Heritage site. After a long stroll through the city, venture next to discover its Atlantic coast. The perfect opportunity to breathe in the sea air and enjoy the numerous beaches lining the coastline.
Aveiro: stroll through one of Portugal's most beautiful cities
Located on the west coast, Aveiro is considered one of Portugal's most beautiful cities. Why? Its famous Ria de Aveiro, which offers distinctive landscapes! This lagoon was once a natural resource exploited for its fish and seaweed.
Today, it allows you to stroll through the city aboard moliceiros (traditional boats with a sickle-shaped prow). During your boat ride, you can admire the Art Nouveau style adorning many buildings. Among them? the Pessoa Major house, the City Museum, or the facade of the splendid agricultural cooperative.
Costa Nova: relax by the sea
Costa Nova is a charming beach resort located in Aveiro district. It is known for its palheiros lining the waterfront. These small striped and colorful houses were originally fishermen's huts. Today, they offer comfortable seaside stays and are what the town is renowned for!
Spared from mass tourism, Costa Nova is appreciated for its tranquility. You can enjoy its beautiful beaches away from the crowds and wander through the alleys of its famous fish market.
Lisbon: explore the capital during a weekend in Portugal
Lisbon is a rich and bustling capital that promises countless discoveries. During your stay, take time to explore the neighborhoods of:
Alfama
This oldest district of the city is also one of the most authentic. A tip? Explore these (very narrow) alleyways aboard its famous tram 28. For a breathtaking view of the city, visit the splendid Castelo de São Jorge. Beyond enjoying its panoramic views, you'll discover the beauty of its ramparts and spot magnificent peacocks in the castle gardens.
Baixa
Located in the city center, Baixa is known for its geometric streets and facades adorned with tilework. This commercial district is always lively. Its must-see spots? The Praça do Comércio and the Torreão Poente museum (which offers breathtaking views over the Tagus).
Bélem
This picturesque district to the west of the city boasts two superb buildings, both UNESCO World Heritage sites:
Belém Tower: built between 1514 and 1519 on the banks of the Tagus, it offers stunning panoramic views and is considered one of the major works of Manueline style (which embodies "Portuguese creative spirit").
Jerónimos Monastery: this exceptional monastery houses numerous treasures (church, cloisters, arcades, vaults, tombs). Drawn by its beauty, countless visitors stream through each day… Consider skip-the-line tickets.
Algarve: discover the caves of this picturesque village
Located in southern Portugal, Algarve is a region renowned for its beaches, cliffs and numerous caves (Zorreira, Algar Seco, Comb Caves or Benagil Caves, etc.). Blessed with vast agricultural lands, the region displays colorful landscapes, dotted with flowers, vineyards and citrus orchards… A picturesque and unforgettable stopover.
