The Algarve's capital is an ideal destination for a 3 or 4-day stay, less than 3 hours by flight from mainland Europe! Fine sandy beach, religious architecture, and the wild beauty of the Ria Formosa: discover all the activities to do and see in Faro…

1. The Arco da Vila (Faro's city gate)
Visiting Faro: the 10 must-do activities in the Algarve capital

The Arco da Vila is the historic gateway to the city of Faro. This stunning monument in neoclassical style is a remnant of a Moorish wall, facing the marina and waterfront. Located in the historic district, it proudly displays its bell tower and superb pinnacles – all renovated in 1812.

During your visit, remember to look up, as the structure is often crowned with a stork's nest! An opportunity to admire the statue of Saint Thomas Aquinas, nestled in an alcove just above the entrance. After passing through this emblematic gate, you'll enter the heart of the old town, renowned for its charming streets.

2. Faro Cathedral and the Old Town

Once in the heart of the historic center, don't miss the stunning Faro Cathedral, located at 11 Largo da Sé. Built in the 13th century, the igreja de Santa Maria has survived several earthquakes and enemy attacks.

Inside? You'll find an organ and a chapel housing relics, as well as chalices, paintings, and a magnificent tower offering breathtaking views over the city and Ria Formosa. During your visit, you'll also have access to a cloister and a lovely small garden. This must-see building can be visited year-round Monday to Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. (€5/adult, €3.50/child).

3. The Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo and the Capela dos Ossos
Visiting Faro: the 10 must-do activities in the Algarve capital

Faro's old town is also home to the igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. Built in 1713, this building displays a stunning facade with a simple and baroque style. But don't be fooled by the apparent simplicity of the place…

Indeed, contrary to the refined lines of the exterior, the church is filled with gilding and sacred artworks, as well as a chapel… made with human bones! The famous capela dos ossos was created from thousands of bones...

The reason? In 1816, thousands of skeletons of Carmelite monks were exhumed from cemeteries because they were "overcrowded." Open year-round, except Sundays (€2/person).

4. The Municipal Museum (Museu Arqueologico)

The Municipal Museum of Faro is located in the former convent of the church Nossa Senhora Assunção. It houses objects and religious pieces from Roman times to the present day. The exhibitions trace the history of Faro, as well as that of the Algarve region. Contemporary art exhibitions are also organized here. Open Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday
