An emblematic glacial valley in Serra da Estrela, Covão da Ametade combines birch forests, granite cliffs and the source of the Zêzere River.

Deep in the heart of Serra da Estrela, the Zêzere River rises at nearly 2,000 meters of elevation near the tower. The river flows along the walls of the amphitheater-shaped cirques and passes through the glacial valley of Covão da Ametade. This vast valley is one of the most visited in Serra da Estrela National Park. Its birch forests, panoramic vistas and snow-covered trails make this place truly enchanting.

What is Covão da Ametade?

Manteigas National Park is home to 3 principal glacial cirques. Once, these cirques fed the largest glacial expanse of Serra da Estrela. Today, that expanse has given way to the current course of the Zêzere River. This river takes form at the foot of Cântaro Magro, where the glacial landscape of Covão da Ametade begins.

Covão da Ametade is part of the first cirque that fed the Zêzere glacier tongue (which is currently the source of the river bearing the same name). This cirque consists of 3 glacial cirques.

To know:

  • Covão Cimeiro (the uppermost),
  • Covão da Ametade,
  • Covão da Albergaria (the smallest).

These depressed, poorly drained and circular zones are typical of mountainous areas subjected to glaciation. In normal times, they give rise to small lagoons. They are hollows where snow accumulates and transforms into ice to feed the glacier tongues of the valleys. In France, these glacial cirques are called "ombilic".
