Castro Laboreiro
In the heart of Peneda-Gerês National Park, Castro Laboreiro presides over a landscape of granite, dolmens, and ancient shepherd dogs.
Castro Laboreiro, a charming small village, sits within Peneda-Gerês National Park and lies nestled between the Penada and Laboreiro mountain ranges. At the heart of nature, this tiny settlement and its surroundings boast magnificent landscapes of crystalline rivers, lush pastures, cascading waterfalls, historic monuments, and prehistoric megaliths.
History
Castro Laboreiro is a former civil parish in the municipality of Melgaço, which belonged to Viana do Castelo district. This administrative subdivision had just 540 inhabitants in 2011. A territorial reorganization occurred in 2012, when the region merged with the neighboring parish of Lama de Mouro.
Demographically, this small Portuguese village experienced significant population decline during the 1960s. This was due to the harsh living conditions of its inhabitants at that time, the severity of its climate, economic hardship, and state neglect. During the 1980s, the number of villagers continued to plummet, this time owing to an aging population.
