🧭 Off the beaten pathCulture & HeritageNature & Landscapes

Nestled within a granite canyon in the Serra da Estrela, Loriga river beach offers swimming in cool mountain waters within wild, unspoiled surroundings far from the crowds.

Loriga is a mountain village clinging to the slopes of the Serra da Estrela in central Portugal. Its river beach extends along the Loriga river, framed by granite and dense vegetation. The water, refreshing even in summer, attracts families and hikers descending from the surrounding trails. The site remains relatively uncrowded compared to Algarve beaches, giving it a peaceful and authentic atmosphere.

Practical information at a glance

  • Access: by car from Seia (approximately 20 km) or from Covilhã via the mountain road.
  • Entry: free.
  • Season: open for swimming in summer (June to September), subject to river conditions.
  • What to bring: swimwear; the water is cool even in the height of summer.

What to see

The river beach is organized around a natural pool formed by the Loriga river. The banks are lined with granite rocks polished by water and patches of grassy areas. Riverside vegetation—alders and ferns—provides partial shade. Upstream, the river cascades down from the heights of the Serra da Estrela.

History and context

Loriga is nicknamed "Portugal's Tibet" because of its isolated position within a deep canyon. The village has a long textile tradition linked to Serra da Estrela wool. The Loriga river once powered ancient mills and cloth-fulling units. The river beach is now a leisure space developed by the Seia municipality.

Highlights of the visit

Swimming in mountain water

The Loriga water descends directly from the summits of the Serra da Estrela. It remains cool and crystal-clear throughout the summer. The clarity of the current allows you to observe the rocky bottom and local aquatic wildlife.

The canyon and granite rocks

The canyon walls frame the beach spectacularly. The granite blocks offer vantage points over the river and serve as natural resting spots between swims.

The village of Loriga

Just a few minutes' walk away, the village retains slate and granite architecture typical of the Serra da Estrela. Narrow streets, fountains, and the parish church merit brief exploration after your swim.

Photography tips

Morning light is softest on the river, before the sun climbs too high above the canyon. Reflections on the water and granite rocks are particularly photogenic late in the morning. To frame the canyon in its entirety, climb the rocks on the left bank.

Location and access

Loriga is located in the concelho of Seia, in the district of Guarda, at the heart of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. The access road from Seia (N231) is winding and narrow in places. There is no regular public transport to the village; a car is essential. A car park is available at the village entrance, a short walk from the beach.
